The seven (7) different types of scaffolding are used in many industries to support men and materials while working at height. The seven different types of scaffolding will include cantilever scaffolding, suspended scaffolding, single scaffolding, double scaffolding, trestle scaffolding, patented scaffolding, and steel scaffolding.
What is Scaffolding Mean
Scaffolding is a temporary structure or working platform made of timber and steel to support men and materials while they work at height. Scaffolding must be stable enough to sustain the load of men and materials placed on it during construction work. There are seven different types of scaffolding with different types of construction work. Scaffolding must be built with. Proper top rails, mid rails, and toe boards.
Always ensure that The scaffolding is inspected and that there is a green tag before you use any scaffolding. This green tag will indicate that the scaffolding has been inspected and is safe to use. All scaffolding users should be trained in working at a height training course and must use full-body harnesses if the scaffolding height is more than 1.8 meters.
What Are The Seven Different Types of Scaffolding
Following are the seven different types of scaffolding:
- Cantilever scaffolding.
- Suspended scaffolding.
- Single scaffolding.
- Double scaffolding.
- Trestle scaffolding.
- Patented scaffolding.
- Steel scaffolding.
1. Cantilever Scaffolding
There are seven different types of scaffolding used in construction. One of them is called cantilever scaffolding, which is also known as needle scaffolding. Because the standards of cantilever scaffolding are supported on a series of needles, these needles are taken out through the holes in the wall. In the other types, needles are strutted inside the floor through openings that are called independent or double frame type scaffolding.
Adequate care and close supervision must be ensured during the installation of cantilever scaffolding. And it must be inspected by a competent person before use.
Generally, there are some conditions for the use of cantilever scaffolding, such as:
- When the ground needs to be cleared to avoid traffic issues.
- When the ground can’t sustain the standards.
- When the upper parts of the wall are under construction.
2. Suspended Scaffolding
Suspended scaffolding is a platform suspended from an overhead structure by wire ropes or other non-rigid means. It can be raised or lowered to the required level of height. This type of scaffolding is used for repair work, painting work, cleaning of buildings, etc.
Regular inspection of suspended scaffolding must be carried out to ensure that the means through which it is suspended are in sound conditions. Nobody shall be exposed under the suspended scaffolding.
3. Single Scaffolding
Generally, Single scaffolding is used for brick masonry work. That’s why it is also called bricklayer scaffolding. Single scaffolding stands parrel to the wall of a structure by using verticle supports, which are called standards. Ledgers, horizontal supports of single scaffolding will be fixed to the standards at an even angle in a vertical position.
Standards of single scaffolding shall be placed on the sole board in a vertical position, and it must be supported with the help of putlogs through the holes in the building or any other existing structure.
4. Double Scaffolding
Generally, double scaffolding is used for masonry work. That’s why, It is also called Mason’s scaffolding. It is hard to make holes in the stone wall to support putlogs. So, two rows of scaffolding shall be constructed to make it stronger and stronger.
This type of scaffolding shall be constructed 20 to 30 cm away from the walls for the first row, and the second one will be 1m away from the first row. To make it stronger, cross bracing shall be utilized. This is also called independent scaffolding.
5. Trestle Scaffolding
A trestle scaffolding is a working platform that shall be supported on movable tripods or ladders. Generally, trestle scaffolding is used inside the building for painting and repair work. The height of this scaffolding shall be up to 5 meters.
Trestle scaffolding might be light, medium, heavy, or special-duty scaffolding. This is often used for bricklayers and plasterwork for fit-out and finishing the work.
6. Patented Scaffolding
Patented scaffolding is made of steel, but Special coupling and frames are equipped with these types of scaffolding. Patented scaffolding is available in the market in readymade condition. This scaffolding working platform is arranged on the bracket, which will help to adjust the height as per the requirement.
These types of scaffolding are vastly easy to assemble and disassemble. This is useful for short-term jobs, such as repair work.
7. Steel Scaffolding
Steel scaffolding is made of steel tubes that are fixed together with steel couplers and fittings. It is fire-resistant and easy to construct or dismantle. It has greater strength and durability. Steel scaffolding is costly, but it gives more safety for workers. That’s why it is used in a wide range nowadays.
Types of Scaffolding Couplers
Scaffolding couplers are crucial parts of the scaffolding. These are used for assembling the tube & coupler scaffolding.
Types of scaffolding couplers are as follows;
- Double Coupler.
- Boards Coupler.
- Girder Coupler.
- Putlog Coupler.
- Swivel Coupler.
- Half Coupler.
- Swivel Girder Coupler.
- Forged Double Coupler.
- Joint Pin Coupler.
- Joint Box Coupler.
- Ladder Coupler.
- Fixed Coupler.
- Swivel Coupler, etc.
There are seven different types of scaffolding used in construction. You must ensure that the scaffolding is inspected by a competent person, And have a green tag before you use any scaffolding. If anything is missing in the scaffolding, such as top rails, mid rails, and toe boards, inform the concerned supervisor, and avoid using incomplete scaffolding.
